Of course, if you doesn't a cipher of whatever, GnuPG will use his defaults values, set un gpg.conf files.
But to send email with the right digest, you have to set the correct digest in FireGPG's options.

I just tested what FireGPG do.
Select the text / Right click / FireGPG / Decrypt. 4 step. I don't think it's a real problem

It's working for basic function (sign, etc.), but there could be problem with key management, not tested yet. Tell us ^^
And you can install what you want, if you have a gnupg.exe working everything is ok
